Material culture as a research topic is currently receiving increasing attention in numerous cultural studies disciplines. The questions are not only focussed on the object and its material form, but also on the contexts, on the perception of our material environment and on the different ways of dealing with everyday and non-everyday objects. The introduction shows the different approaches and research strands and explains the common foundations in relation to the object of research and methods.
